We have just spent a year completely revamping our house and have been mulling over the solar power question but not taken it any further. We would be very interested in further details and costs involved.

We already have a pair of solar thermal panels and have looked into solar pv in the past but dismissed it on grounds of cost and also that our roof is not ideal facing ESE. The link to the MSE site you sent was very interesting though and we are still interested in reducing our reliance on "the grid".
We do have some funds available but are also considering investing it to remove our reliance on our oil boiler. A wood pellet boiler is currently our favored option, or an air source heat pump second. With oil prices continuing to rise, the investment in these technologies is looking increasingly attractive and they also get yearly cashback from the government.
Maybe in the future oil consolidation may be replaced with wood pellet consolidation?!

Friend in W.Bassett has some installed - coming up to 1 year now. His supplier was Sun Save and he seems happy with the panels which are British made. He was 'advised' that Chinese panels were not such good quality and 'often arrive damaged and then installation is delayed'. The only problem I can see with his set up is that the inverter (made by Platinum?) is only guaranteed for 5 years which seems quite short given the 25 year guarantee on the panels. The system was installed by a local guy in Bassett - can supply his contact details if we get to that stage but presumably we are looking at doing a bulk buy of all the kit + installation?

We had already started giving serious thought to fitting solar panels but haven't yet progressed to the research stage. So yes, we'd certainly be very interested in supporting a joint buy.
